About the Rabbi

Rabbi Daniel Swartz

Rabbi Daniel J. Swartz has served as the spiritual leader of Temple Hesed since 2006, bringing passion and innovation to the community. His dedication to Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world, is evident in his diverse initiatives and global recognition as an expert on faith and the environment. Rabbi Swartz has participated in interfaith climate change dialogues at the Vatican and has spoken at global environmental gatherings1.

At Temple Hesed, Rabbi Swartz has introduced numerous enriching programs, including innovative celebrations of Tu B’Shevat, topical Purim spiels, interfaith classes, and adult education on Jewish culture and traditions. He is committed to inclusivity, creating welcoming spaces for the LGBTQ+ community and Jews of color.

Rabbi Swartz’s professional background includes serving as the Executive Director of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL) and working with various social justice organizations. He is the author of the children’s book “Bim and Bom: A Shabbat Tale” and the lead author and editor of “To Till and To Tend: A Guide for Jewish Environmental Study and Action”.

He holds degrees in Geological Sciences and Environmental Policy from Brown University, where he received the Senior Prize in Environmental Studies. Rabbi Swartz has received numerous academic honors from Hebrew Union College, including an educational excellence award, and election to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.

Rabbi Swartz considers it his greatest blessing is being on this journey with his daughter, Alana, and his spouse and best friend, Rabbi Marjorie Berman.
