Oppenheim Institute

Documentary film producer Judith Helfand will be the 2009 Oppenheim Institute on March 27. The Shabbat service will start at 7:30 p.m. Helfand has won a Peabody Award and a Sundance Film Festival award for two of her documentaries.

The film she is currently working on is called "Cooked" — about the 1995 heat wave that killed more than 700 people in Chicago— and what it tells us about economic and racial justice, global warming etc.

She is Jewish and has appeared at regional URJ events, Hadassah conventions, etc. Her website is www.judithhelfand.com

Helfand speaks widely and passionately about all of this work in North America and internationally, and teaches documentary making as a full-time faculty member at New York University’s Undergraduate School of Film & Television.

Remember the date is March 27. Admission is free. Make plans to attend.

Social Action Roundtable

Join us at our winter Social Action Roundtable, Friday Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. as we explore tensions between science and faith, with a discussion co-led by Temple President Mark Davis and Rabbi Daniel Swartz.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of Origin of the Species, Darwin's classic work on natural selection and evolution.

Controversies about science and religion continue to rage today, as, for example, Texas considers how it will address evolution in its school textbooks.

As hundreds of congregations across the country are marking Evolution Weekend, we at Temple Hesed will take a look at how Reform Judaism tries to reconcile science and faith. As with all our roundtables, a shortened, sermon-less service will be followed by brief presentations and lively discussion.

This event is open to the public, and we encourage you to bring friends of all faiths (or none!).
